On Surface devices, fingerprint reading may live in the detachable Type Cover keyboard or in the device itself, depending on the model. Microsoft services these readers through Surface support and Windows Update together, so keeping the device current usually keeps sign-in working without a separate hunt. If the reader is in a Type Cover, make sure that cover is the version with the fingerprint sensor.
