Plain-English definition
Original Equipment Manufacturer. The company that originally built the complete computer system, such as Dell, HP, or Lenovo.
Example in context
“For laptops, it is usually best to download drivers directly from the OEM rather than the individual part manufacturer.”
Where you may see this term
The maker’s name and exact model usually appear on the case label, purchase record, firmware screen, or System Information page. The OEM may customize audio, graphics, touchpad, power, wireless, and hotkey packages for the way those components are integrated into the complete computer.
Practical guidance
Use the model or service tag on the maker’s documentation page instead of choosing by a component name alone. This is especially important for laptops and prebuilt desktops. Component-vendor packages may be appropriate only when the computer maker directs you there or no longer maintains the model.
