Windows driver glossary

Driver

Plain-English definition

A small software program that acts as a translator, allowing the operating system to communicate effectively with a specific piece of hardware.

Example in context

“Without the correct graphics driver, your monitor might display everything in a low, stretched resolution.”

Where you may see this term

Most drivers work in the background and are visible through Device Manager, installed-app lists, update history, or a hardware maker’s utility. A package may include the core device driver plus control panels, services, firmware tools, or optional companion features.

Practical guidance

Identify the exact hardware and record the current provider and version before looking for another package. Prefer built-in updates or documentation from the PC or component maker. Do not replace a stable driver solely because a third-party scanner claims that every installed component needs an update.
